Dixie State University announced Wednesday the appointment of Dr. Richard Featherstone as the institution’s new Dean of the Humanities. Featherstone, who will assume his new duties this July 1, replaces longtime DSU faculty member and dean Dr. Donald Ray Hinton, who retired last December after nearly 40 years of service at Dixie State.
A native of Salem, Ore., Dr. Featherstone graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Oregon State University. He also earned his Master’s degree and Ph.D. (specializing in Criminology) in Sociology from Purdue University. Featherstone also holds a Master’s degree in Exegetical Theology from Western Seminary.
“I’m excited to welcome Richard Featherstone to our campus as the new Dean of Humanities,” said Dr. William J. Christensen, DSU Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer. “He brings energy, empathy, innovation, and analytical capabilities that will serve us well. I look forward to having Dr. Featherstone join our DSU family.”
Featherstone currently serves as Coordinator of Outreach and Community Engagement for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Northern Iowa. He has published several articles in the areas of policing, delinquency, and the sociology of religion. In addition to teaching a variety of criminology and sociology courses, he has previously served as an interim department head and an associate dean at UNI.
Featherstone and his wife, Kathryn, are the parents of two daughters. He is an avid runner and enjoys archery, as well as hiking and camping trips with his family.
